Eat-Play-Drink: BONOM

EAT-PLAY-DRINK … that’s the tag line for a new restaurant concept, BONOM Club de Petanca, near Bodega Aurrera and Distrito Soma; an area where restaurants, high end stores and bars are popping up so fast, we lost count. One thing we can say for sure: We wish that we had thought this concept up first before owner, Javier Gonzalez, because it’s SMA’s newest hot spot. EAT… The food is prepared by none other than one of SMA’s favorite chefs, JJ Castaneda; French influenced by the game of Patanca. From a French Vietnamese Bhan Mi sandwich, French Canadian Poutine to a Greek salad, Hummus or a vegetarian burger, the dishes get high marks for what is considered world street food. What we had on the menu was really special to us; a hamburger that Chef Gabriel Ordonez use to make at Mercado Sano that we’ve been craving for years and has now shown up on the menu at BONOM. I use to dream about this burger. I got my burger fix just as I remembered, made with a blend of short rib and brisket with a special sauce and extra crispy fries. It’s a bargain at $190 pesos; one of SMA best buys. JJ is happy. He’s got a new restaurant where he can be creative; something chefs value the most. PLAY… Petanca is the French version of the Italian game of bocce, which I often played with my family back home. The rules of the game are simple; players or teams play their boules/balls towards a target ball. Study up before you go. You play for free if you order food or drink. Parking at Distrito Soma across the street is also free. https://www.usapetanque.org/how-to-play-peacutetanque.html DRINK… Get reasonably priced drinks - from artisanal craft beers and imports to a full bar that includes the ever popular Micheladas and Clamatos to a Bacardi and Coke, Tequilas, Mezcals and local wines. Directions: Our car service had a hard time finding BONOM. From town, it’s on the right hand side of the street on Calzada de la Estacion down from Bodega Aurrera and the Libremento. It’s before you get to Distrito Soma, which is left on the opposite side of the street. There is a big white wall with an orange and yellow sign. During hours, the door is open and you’ll see the Petanca court with some rather festive drawings on the back wall. We love it because it’s open air and the only place in SMA of its kind to eat, drink and play. Once you know it’s there, you’ll wonder how you missed it in the first place.
